How The Gorditos Were Born: "About three years ago I decided to try the chiaroscuro technique of Dutch painter Rembrandt: dimly lighted subjects emerging from a dark atmosphere, rendered with a strictly reduced range of pigments. My subjects were deliberately disproportioned, yet they transmitted tenderness and a timeless sense. People seemed to like it. Me too. Gradually, I realized that accentuating both the volume of my subjects and the tonal values of the work, while adding primary and secondary colors, the result improved a lot more. Then, over the time, I added one more contrast to my paintings. I augmented the volume of my subjects' bodies, arms and legs even more. And at the same time I diminished their head size. It satisfied me and surprised me. People began to identify my art works simply as Gorditos!" Vico Contact the Artist:
