DAVID BECK-BROWN
Oil on Canvas/Mixed Media

David Beck-Brown is a multi-talented artist with training in the visual, performing and literary arts. Many of his carved paintings measure from 72 X 72 inches, and consist of seven to nine layers of laminated canvas. "The art-making process facilitates my dialogue with the sacred. I embrace the theory that our ancient ancestors were communicating with a higher power as they painted images in special caves. When they began grinding into the stone itself, and the pictographic images evolved into pectographic cuttings, the shaman were, in a since, breaking through the physical membrane restricting our reality.

It is for this reason that I laminate from seven to nine layers of canvases upon one another and use my cut, grind, and burn technique to rip through them. The grinding process creates shapes that occasionally appear as intricate weavings, or fine lace. The layers of canvas are as growth rings in a tree, or chapters in a book.”

An example of his large-scale monochrome steel sculptures can be seen in the heart of California's beautiful coastal community of Del Mar, located on the top terrace of the enchanted Del Mar Plaza. As a performer, Beck-Brown has worked with the old Harry Partch Foundation, the original San Diego Dance Theater, and other companies such as his own Inter-media Performance. He has art degrees in Sculpture and Painting from San Diego State University.

Grounded with a commitment that artists must be pro-active in community affairs, Beck-Brown has written articles for the Daily Californian newspaper, commentaries for the San Diego Union-Tribune and the Los Angeles Times, as well as other publication such as Vision Magazine and Hidden Leaves. "All experiences in the life of an artist are made visible in the artworks very fabric."

Additional work by Beck-Brown may also be seen at www.lauraley.com. This April, during Artwalk, for the third consecutive year, his artwork will once again be seen in the cavernous space of the old Santa Fe Train Depot luggage room.
